On the evening of the Euros 2024 semi-final between England and Netherlands, I expected a low turn out. I was wrong, there were 17 of us in all. While the football match played inside the pub, we enjoyed various chat across three picnic tables in the beer garden.

Topics of conversation:

  • The election result and early changes
  • Apple Care replacing a six year old iMac – well worth the subscription
  • Building work stops client work
  • British Grand Prix
  • Making Mac apps from iPhone apps
  • Working for agencies as a freelancer
  • Retrocomputing
  • Football
  • Work availability
  • The Hairy Bikers Pie Maker
  • Long Covid
  • Allotment talk
  • Nassim Nicholas Taleb books
  • Grave of the Fireflies and Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind
  • Politics
  • How much of the allegory in film, TV and books is actually planned?

Applecare – well worth the subscription

Ryan told us about the problems he’d had with his Mac recently. Fortunately, he had a subscription to Applecare, and Apple will be covering the cost of a new Mac for him, even though his computer is six years old. I hadn’t realised there is a subscription version of Applecare now and it was well worth the yearly cost to his company as it’s now getting him a top of the line replacement computer.

Do remember that as a freelancer you’re a business and that although things like an extended warranty cost money, they can be treated as an expense so you will get a little of that cost off of your tax bill.
