How much work do you get done, and more… freelancers meeting on 6th November 2024
Posted by Paul Silver
On the 6th of November, twelve freelancers met in the Battle of Trafalgar pub to talk all things self employment and tech. This is some of what we talked about:
- Finding code in heavily abstracted projects
- Task management systems
- Padrone ring mouse
- Finding work for several days a week rather than full time
- US election results
- Getting incremental change into a company
- Scrapping a car
- React is a quirky m-f
- Redux, Context and React Query
- AI voice duplication of Michael Parkinson (and potentially you, by scammers)
- Perplexity AI
- Do you get on with your other half’s family?
- Working for clients with a good peer review culture
- Live app demo
- The power of persuading people to do the right thing
- Advanced WordPress development
- How many hours of productive work do you get done a day?
- Unpicking a WordPress site with tons of plugins
How much work do you get done a day?
There was no definitive answer to this, it was mainly Dave thinking about some research we could do. From the people in the conversation, 3-4.5 productive, billable hours in a day was not unusual. If you’re getting more than that done, congratulations! Less? Try not to beat yourself up about it. Build up slowly, find methods that work for you, and try to be consistent. Don’t forget to take breaks. Getting work done over the long term means pacing yourself.
