Notes from our freelancers meet up on 18th December 2024

Posted by

Our last freelancers meet up of 2024 saw 15 of us meet in the Battle of Trafalgar pub in Brighton. This is some of what we talked about:

  • Writing straight HTML and CSS with no Bootstrap/front end framework
  • Cooking gluten free pastry (Laura’s recommendation: coconut oil)
  • Having work suddenly cancelled or put off
  • A project with a 28,000 line CSS file, which is far from the only problem
  • Communication is key when dealing with a difficult project – you don’t want the client to be surprised by an invoice
  • WordPress has to reverse anti-WP Engine changes
  • Reporting a dodgy builder
  • “Wait long enough by the river and eventually the bodies of your enemies will float by”
  • Preparing for Christmas
  • The annoyances of your birthday being near Christmas
  • Caring for your parents
  • Getting out of Bitcoin
  • The potentials of retirement
  • Picking through an existing, complicated project
  • A very Merry Christmas to all

Thank you to everyone who has come to The Farm this year. It’s been a tough year for freelancing and being able to compare notes and talk rubbish with other freelancers has made it a much more enjoyable year for me.
