Details

I work hands on as a developer focussing on PHP, JavaScript and Python among other languages. I also run a small development agency GetInstance through which I’m lucky to work with a talented team. We offer full stack services including system architecture, devops, Web design, software testing, refactoring and automation. We build and refactor bespoke systems and work across the popular frameworks.

I am the author of a number of tech books and articles but I’m chiefly known for PHP 8: Objects, Patterns, and Practice which has run to seven edition and grown to two volumes. The second volume of the latest edition is due for publication in summer 2025.

Both individually and with my colleagues at GetInstance, I specialise in open source and open standards technologies. We tend to work with organisations in transition, whether they are at the back-of-an-envelope stage or outgrowing a successful first phase and looking to scale, extend or bulletproof their systems.
